Greek dancing is traditionally performed in a circle, and we honour that format in our sessions. Popi Charitaki demonstrates the steps of each new dance, guiding the group with clarity and enthusiasm. The circle is formed with more experienced dancers at the front, allowing newer members to follow and learn naturally.
We also explore different musical interpretations of the same dances, expanding our understanding of Greece’s diverse folk traditions and rhythms. This approach helps deepen our appreciation and keeps our repertoire fresh and evolving.
Since our founding, we’ve welcomed participants from many countries beyond Greece, including the UK, Cyprus, Hungary, Russia, Romania, Albania, Poland, and Germany. Our group reflects the multicultural spirit of Leicester and the universal appeal of Greek dance.
From time to time, participants also share traditional dances from their own cultures, giving us the chance to learn and enjoy dances from around the world. These moments of cultural exchange enrich our sessions and strengthen the sense of community within the group.
We occasionally organise dance seminars to deepen our understanding of Greek folk traditions and improve our technique. These events are a great opportunity to learn from guest instructors and connect with other dance enthusiasts.
We are proud to be connected and support the work of "Ithaca", the Greek Cultural Society of Birmingham .
We are proud to be affiliated with the Society for International Folk Dancing (SIFD), which supports our mission to promote cultural exchange and traditional dance across communities.
